The information below describes an NSF-funded project for planning the formation of a potential new center. Planning activities include: industry engagement, workshop planning and execution; identification of research areas of strong industrial interest/need; realization of industrial support commitments; future preparation of a proposal to NSF seeking funding for a Phase I center.
The planned Center for Science, Technology, and Advanced Research in Space (C-STARS) is a multidisciplinary research hub with the mission to support and serve the growing space manufacturing sector and train the next generation of workers in space technologies, sciences, and exploration. C-STARS brings together universities, industries, and the Florida Spaceport to transform access to the space environment and develop innovative, on-demand, in situ space manufacturing capabilities in biopharma, microelectronics, payload hardware solutions, and launch processing and recycling. The overall vision of C-STARS is to ensure the US achieves and sustains global space manufacturing preeminence. The initial research thrusts of C-STARS include: 1) in-space manufacturing of products that benefit life on Earth, and 2) on-demand in-space manufacturing to support the manned exploration of space.
