Center Overview
Real-time analytics is the leading edge of the smart data revolution. The Center for Accelerated Real Time Analytics (CARTA) works with next-generation hardware technologies to build cognitive analytics systems and active storage devices for real-time analytics. The vision of CARTA is to drive innovation in faster-than-life analytics.
The use of data analytics has become a basic and fundamental need for private and public organizations that want to provide high levels of service to their clients and customers. But data is no longer limited to static repositories that can be analyzed at will. It now includes live, moving data sources such as video, voice, social networking, and the "internet of things" data that must be integrated across multiple sources to provide immediate, real-time decision support.
Extracting value from massive and moving data hinges on balancing research, technological know-how, and commercial market intelligence. Achieving this involves more than just speeding up the processes of data collection and analysis. Data wrangling, the process of preparing data for the application of analytic tools and techniques, is rapidly becoming a critical part of the analytics process.
Data governance is another developing challenge as organizations seek to use data from many sources. Understanding the quality and provenance of the data is vital to making trustworthy decisions based on analyzing multisource data streams.
Cutting across all of these is the need to maintain the security of the data and the analytic processes, especially when the data itself can contain executable and potentially malicious elements.

To meet the demand for technologies and expertise in real time analytics, CARTA, through its research, is developing cutting-edge tools, approaches, and expertise that will significantly lower the barriers of entry into advanced, real-time analytics.

Developing tools and technologies in this realm of real-time and accelerated analytics contributes to promoting the progress of science and to advancing the national prosperity and welfare. The focus of CARTA is on horizontal foundational technologies that would create an infrastructure capable of powering applications of national significance. In this context, at Rutgers-New Brunswick (RU-NB), the CARTA/RU-NB site will enable new application domains through innovative machine learning, statistical, modeling methods and technologies for accelerated and real-time analytics. Having these technologies and tools will be key in achieving the goals of the overall CARTA center.
The broader impact of the work of the CARTA center will be in addressing the future advanced, real-time analytics needs of the industry and society. The techniques developed by CARTA can be applied across industry sectors, including national security, healthcare, manufacturing, energy, and business intelligence. The fundamental research done at CARTA will be translated into technology developments, delivering practical solutions to hard problems. The ultimate success of this paradigm shift by the analytics industry will rest on the ability of CARTA universities to prepare experts to take advantage of the science and technologies to solve a variety of real-life applications.

These technologies include machine learning, cognitive, quantum, neuromorphic, and edge computing combined with new classes of sensory and programmable hardware components, active storage, advanced FPGA processors, in-memory cloud systems, and embedded sensors. They address many pursuits of national defense and cybersecurity, weather and climate prediction, health/disease monitoring, Industrial IoT, etc. In IUCRC/CARTA Phase II, we develop new accelerated and real-time approaches to address these advanced technologies and their integration relevant to our partners.
We leverage cutting-edge research in AI/ML and programmable cyber-systems to conduct collaborative CARTA research. Our research areas include accelerated medical image analytics, explainable and interpretable AI/ML for medical and vision/language models, digital twins for real time dynamical systems, and physics-informed AI/ML modeling for improved understanding. Our research will be primarily “application neutral,” i.e., techniques that can be applied with modifications across multiple disciplines, including cyber security, healthcare and medical, dynamic systems, environment, and business intelligence. Our exploration will include deep learning, semi/unsupervised learning, federated learning, architectures, real-time simulations, data compliance, and Blockchains. In this context, the CARTA/UMBC site will focus on developing next generation self-learning systems that will leverage High Performance Computing (HPC) platforms to facilitate real-time critical decision-making.
Our projects will benefit businesses by providing a larger pool of a highly skilled diverse workforce. CARTA (Center for Accelerated Real-time Analytics) is a multi-university Industry-University Cooperative Research Center that started in 2018. As more devices are deployed that produce real-time data, technologies beyond simply storing and archiving future use data are in demand. CARTA aims at developing such techniques by exploiting artificial intelligence and machine learning, which would make an impact on a wide range of areas, including science, engineering, medicine, marketing, and finances. University of Miami will join CARTA as a new partner site (called “CARTA Miami”), support the mission of CARTA, and expand the scope of research of CARTA.
The real-time analytics research at CARTA Miami will be focused on neuroscience, signal processing, IoT, genetics, UAVs, and marketing. Initial research projects will focus on a) using real-time EEG feedback from portable EEG systems to produce music recommendations for controlling mood, b) combining real-time audio and video captured with UAVs to detect anomaly, c) adding genetic information to real-time product recommendation, d) delivering real-time recommendations to shoppers, and e) collecting IoT signals in smart homes to make real-time decisions. CARTA Miami will leverage the high-performance computing available at the Institute for Data Science and Computing at the University.
CARTA Miami will offer a unique opportunity for graduate students to improve their research and communication skills. They will participate in collaborative research with industrial partners. The experience will teach the graduate students how to succeed in industrial R&D, which is essential for their careers. Furthermore, the industrial partners can expand their research portfolio by exploring new ideas at CARTA. Because CARTA is a multi-site center, sharing of information across sites can bring additional benefits to both its partners and students. The site will communicate its activities through research publications, conference presentations, and reports.
At all partner sites of CARTA, the private industry partner data is kept confidential. CARTA has a center-wide 6-month embargo policy. CARTA Miami follows this Center-wide policy. Under the policy, publicly-available data generated at CARTA Miami will be made available after a 6-month embargo through the University of Miami’s data repository. CARTA research may involve sensitive academic and industrial data along with public domain data. This data and resulting research outputs will be maintained using appropriate best practices for each type of data for a period of three years after the closing of CARTA. A central repository, suitably tagged for appropriate referencing and documentation, will be set up at https://carta.umbc.edu for maintaining the acquired and generated data from Center projects. Project results will be made available in response to approved user requests.

Accelerated and real-time analytics is a leading edge of the smart data revolution, pushed by advances in internet-connected sensor hardware on one side and accelerated AI/ML analytics on the other. These technologies include AI/ML, cognitive, quantum, neuromorphic, and edge computing combined with new classes of sensory and programmable hardware components, active storage, flash storage, in-memory cloud systems, embedded sensors, etc. They address many pursuits of national defense and cybersecurity, weather and wildfire prediction, health- and disease-monitoring, Industrial IoT, etc. In IUCRC CARTA Phase II, we will develop new accelerated and real-time approaches to these technologies relevant to our industrial and agency partners.
We will leverage our cutting-edge research in AI/ML and programmable cyber-systems to conduct collaborative CARTA research. Our research areas include accelerated medical image analytics, explainable/interpretable AI/ML for medical and vision/language models, digital twins for dynamical systems with acceleration, and physics-based modeling with AI/ML for improved understanding, programmable coupled software and hardware for accelerated analytics. Our research will be primarily “application neutral.” Therefore, the techniques we will develop can be applied with modifications across multiple industry sectors, including cyber security, healthcare and medical, dynamic systems, environment, and business intelligence. The technologies we will explore include semi/un-supervised learning, federated learning, programmable architectures, language/vision models, real-time simulations, and blockchains.
Our project will benefit businesses by providing a larger pool of highly skilled workforce. We will disseminate the results of this collaborative research with industry widely by publishing them in appropriate journals and conferences. We also propose to share the results of our research with other non-CARTA institutions that want to duplicate this approach. We will leverage our programs for underrepresented undergraduate/graduate students to recruit them for summer internships at our industry partners and research in CARTA projects. The MS in Data-Science Program will be used for students to do CAPSTONE projects.
