Center Overview

Real-time analytics is the leading edge of the smart data revolution. The Center for Accelerated Real Time Analytics (CARTA) works with next-generation hardware technologies to build cognitive analytics systems and active storage devices for real-time analytics. The vision of CARTA is to drive innovation in faster-than-life analytics.

The use of data analytics has become a basic and fundamental need for private and public organizations that want to provide high levels of service to their clients and customers. But data is no longer limited to static repositories that can be analyzed at will. It now includes live, moving data sources such as video, voice, social networking, and the "internet of things" data that must be integrated across multiple sources to provide immediate, real-time decision support.

Extracting value from massive and moving data hinges on balancing research, technological know-how, and commercial market intelligence. Achieving this involves more than just speeding up the processes of data collection and analysis. Data wrangling, the process of preparing data for the application of analytic tools and techniques, is rapidly becoming a critical part of the analytics process.

Data governance is another developing challenge as organizations seek to use data from many sources. Understanding the quality and provenance of the data is vital to making trustworthy decisions based on analyzing multisource data streams.

Cutting across all of these is the need to maintain the security of the data and the analytic processes, especially when the data itself can contain executable and potentially malicious elements.

Phase I IUCRC University of Maryland Baltimore County: Center for Accelerated Real Time Analytics (CARTA)

Nearly every research field and industry sector is struggling with extracting useful information from massive and dynamic data in a timely way. Developing tools and technologies in this realm of real-time and accelerated analytics contributes to promoting the progress of science and to advancing the national prosperity and welfare. Success in this realm hinges on balancing fundamental research, technological know-how, and commercial market intelligence. To address this challenge, this project joins industry members with academic centers to conduct multidisciplinary science and research towards extracting value from massive and moving data and enabling better decision making of complex, dynamic data. The Center of Accelerated Real Time Analytics (CARTA) project explores the ways in which relatively high-risk fundamental developments can be leveraged to help organizations that have longer-term, more complex analytic needs. The focus of CARTA is on horizontal foundational technologies that would create an infrastructure capable of powering applications of national significance. In this context, at University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), the CARTA/UMBC site will focus on developing next generation cognitive/self-learning systems that will leverage high performance computing and quantum computing platforms, to facilitate real-time critical decision making. Having these technologies and systems will be key in achieving the goals of the overall CARTA center. The broader impact of the work of the CARTA center will be in addressing the future advanced, real-time analytics needs of the industry and society. The techniques developed by CARTA can be applied across industry sectors, including national security, healthcare, manufacturing, energy, and business intelligence. The fundamental research done at CARTA will be translated into technology developments, delivering practical solutions to hard problems. The ultimate success of this paradigm shift by the analytics industry will rest on the ability of CARTA universities to prepare experts to take advantage of the science and technologies to solve a variety of real-life applications. CARTA research may involve sensitive academic and industrial data along with public domain data. This data and resulting research outputs will be maintained using appropriate best practices for each type of data for a period of three years after the closing of CARTA. A central repository, suitably tagged for appropriate referencing and documentation, will be set up at https://carta.umbc.edu for maintaining the acquired and generated data from Center projects. Project results will be made available in response to approved user requests. IUCRC Phase I University of Miami: Center for Accelerated Real Time Analytics (CARTA)

CARTA (Center for Accelerated Real-time Analytics) is a multi-university Industry-University Cooperative Research Center that started in 2018. As more devices are deployed that produce real-time data, technologies beyond simply storing and archiving future use data are in demand. CARTA aims at developing such techniques by exploiting artificial intelligence and machine learning, which would make an impact on a wide range of areas, including science, engineering, medicine, marketing, and finances. University of Miami will join CARTA as a new partner site (called “CARTA Miami”), support the mission of CARTA, and expand the scope of research of CARTA. The real-time analytics research at CARTA Miami will be focused on neuroscience, signal processing, IoT, genetics, UAVs, and marketing. Initial research projects will focus on a) using real-time EEG feedback from portable EEG systems to produce music recommendations for controlling mood, b) combining real-time audio and video captured with UAVs to detect anomaly, c) adding genetic information to real-time product recommendation, d) delivering real-time recommendations to shoppers, and e) collecting IoT signals in smart homes to make real-time decisions. CARTA Miami will leverage the high-performance computing available at the Institute for Data Science and Computing at the University. CARTA Miami will offer a unique opportunity for graduate students to improve their research and communication skills. They will participate in collaborative research with industrial partners. The experience will teach the graduate students how to succeed in industrial R&D, which is essential for their careers. Furthermore, the industrial partners can expand their research portfolio by exploring new ideas at CARTA. Because CARTA is a multi-site center, sharing of information across sites can bring additional benefits to both its partners and students. The site will communicate its activities through research publications, conference presentations, and reports. At all partner sites of CARTA, the private industry partner data is kept confidential. CARTA has a center-wide 6-month embargo policy. CARTA Miami follows this Center-wide policy. Under the policy, publicly-available data generated at CARTA Miami will be made available after a 6-month embargo through the University of Miami’s data repository. Interested researchers, both CARTA members and non-CARTA members, may request copies of data stored in the repository via email.
